What is Adiponectin?
Adiponectin is a hormone produced by fat cells (adipocytes) that plays a key role in regulating metabolism, blood sugar, and inflammation. It is classified as an adipokine, meaning it is a signaling protein released by adipose (fat) tissue.
Adiponectin circulates in the blood in several forms: trimers (low molecular weight), hexamers (medium molecular weight), and high-molecular-weight (HMW) multimers. The HMW form is considered the most biologically active.
Unlike most hormones produced by fat tissue, adiponectin levels are inversely related to body fat. The more body fat a person has, the lower their adiponectin tends to be. Typical plasma concentrations range from 3 to 30 μg/mL, and women naturally have higher levels than men.
Where Does Adiponectin Come From?
Adiponectin is produced primarily by white adipose tissue (fat cells) found beneath the skin, around internal organs, and in bone marrow. Smaller amounts are also produced by skeletal muscle cells, heart muscle cells, and endothelial cells.
