What is Aluminum, Blood?
Aluminum is a naturally occurring metal found widely in the environment. A serum aluminum test measures the amount of aluminum circulating in your blood.
Aluminum has no known biological function in the human body. In healthy individuals, only a tiny fraction of ingested aluminum is absorbed, and the kidneys efficiently remove nearly all of it. Normal serum levels are typically below 10 µg/L.
This test is most commonly ordered for patients on dialysis, those receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN), or individuals with occupational aluminum exposure. Elevated blood levels can indicate accumulation, which may lead to toxicity affecting the brain, bones, and blood.
Where Does Aluminum, Blood Come From?
Aluminum is not produced by the body. It enters through dietary intake (estimated 3–9 mg daily from food and water), medications such as antacids and phosphate binders, cosmetics, and occupational or environmental exposure.
