What is Citrulline?

Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid that plays a key role in the urea cycle, the process your body uses to convert toxic ammonia into urea for excretion.

Unlike most amino acids, citrulline is not incorporated into proteins. Instead, it circulates freely in the blood at a typical concentration around 40 micromol/L and serves as an important intermediate in nitrogen metabolism.

Plasma citrulline is widely used as a biomarker of functional enterocyte (intestinal cell) mass, making it valuable for assessing small bowel health and function.

Where Does Citrulline Come From?

Circulating citrulline is produced mainly by enterocytes (absorptive cells) of the small intestine from glutamine and proline. It is then transported to the kidneys where it is converted into arginine.
