What is Glutamine?
Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the blood and muscle tissue. It is classified as a conditionally essential amino acid, meaning that while the body normally produces enough, demand can exceed supply during periods of physical stress.
Plasma glutamine levels reflect the balance between glutamine production (primarily in skeletal muscle) and consumption by rapidly dividing cells such as immune cells and intestinal lining cells. It also plays a key role in nitrogen transport and ammonia buffering throughout the body.
Where Does Glutamine Come From?
Glutamine is produced primarily in skeletal muscle, with smaller contributions from the lungs, brain, and adipose tissue. It is synthesized from glutamate and ammonia by the enzyme glutamine synthetase.
