What is Isoleucine?

Isoleucine is one of the three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), along with leucine and valine. It is an essential amino acid, meaning your body cannot produce it and it must be obtained from food.

A plasma isoleucine test measures the concentration of this amino acid in your blood. BCAAs account for approximately 35–40% of the essential amino acids in body proteins and about 14–18% of the total amino acids in muscle protein.

Isoleucine levels are often interpreted alongside other BCAAs and amino acids as part of a broader metabolic profile.

Where Does Isoleucine Come From?

Isoleucine is obtained entirely from the diet, primarily from protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, and whole grains. Unlike most amino acids, BCAAs are metabolized mainly in skeletal muscle rather than the liver.
