What is Valine?
Valine is an essential amino acid and one of the three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), along with leucine and isoleucine. Because the body cannot produce valine on its own, it must be obtained through diet.
Plasma valine levels in healthy adults typically range from about 103 to 345 µmol/L. It is measured as part of a plasma amino acid profile, which assesses the balance of amino acids in the blood.
BCAAs account for roughly 35% of the essential amino acids in muscle protein, and valine plays a key role in energy production and muscle metabolism.
Where Does Valine Come From?
Valine cannot be synthesized by the human body and must come entirely from dietary protein sources such as meat, dairy, eggs, soy, beans, and legumes. The recommended daily intake for adults is approximately 24 mg per kilogram of body weight.
