What is Anti-dsDNA Antibody?
Anti-dsDNA antibodies (anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies) are autoantibodies that mistakenly target the body's own DNA. They are one of the most specific blood markers for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic autoimmune disease.
In a healthy immune system, antibodies are directed against foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. In autoimmune conditions, the immune system produces antibodies against the body's own tissues. Anti-dsDNA antibodies specifically bind to the double-helix structure of DNA.
Their presence and concentration are used to help diagnose lupus and to monitor disease activity over time. Rising levels often signal a disease flare, while falling levels may reflect a good response to treatment.
Where Does Anti-dsDNA Antibody Come From?
Anti-dsDNA antibodies are produced by autoreactive B cells (a type of white blood cell) that have escaped normal immune tolerance. DNA released from dead or dying cells is thought to trigger these B cells to produce antibodies against the body's own genetic material.
