What is Arsenic, Urine (Random)?
A random urine arsenic test measures the total amount of arsenic in a spot urine sample. Arsenic is a naturally occurring element found in soil, water, and certain foods that can be toxic to humans at elevated levels.
Arsenic exists in two main forms: inorganic arsenic (the toxic form, found in contaminated water and industrial settings) and organic arsenic (a generally nontoxic form found in seafood). The total urine arsenic test captures both forms, and if elevated, the sample is typically fractionated to determine how much is toxic versus benign.
Because the body excretes most arsenic through the kidneys, urine testing is the preferred method for evaluating recent arsenic exposure (within the past few days).
Where Does Arsenic, Urine (Random) Come From?
Arsenic is not produced by the body. It enters through environmental exposure, primarily from contaminated drinking water (especially private wells), certain foods (rice, seafood, seaweed), occupational settings (mining, smelting, pesticide manufacturing), and in some cases, contaminated soil or air.
