What is Bleeding Time?
Bleeding time is a clinical test that measures how long it takes for bleeding to stop after a small, standardized cut is made on the skin. It assesses your body's ability to form a platelet plug, the first step in stopping bleeding.
Unlike tests that measure clotting factors in a blood sample, bleeding time evaluates primary hemostasis as a whole. This includes platelet function, blood vessel response to injury, and the role of von Willebrand factor in anchoring platelets to damaged vessel walls.
A normal bleeding time using the Ivy method is approximately 2 to 9 minutes. Results beyond 10 minutes are considered prolonged and may indicate a problem with platelet function or number.
Where Does Bleeding Time Come From?
Bleeding time is not a substance measured in the blood. It is a functional test that reflects the combined performance of platelets (produced by megakaryocytes in the bone marrow), von Willebrand factor (made by endothelial cells lining blood vessels and by megakaryocytes), and the blood vessel wall itself.
