What is Ceruloplasmin?

Ceruloplasmin is a copper-carrying protein made by the liver. It transports more than 95% of the copper circulating in your blood.

Beyond carrying copper, ceruloplasmin acts as a ferroxidase enzyme. It converts iron from one form (ferrous, Fe2+) to another (ferric, Fe3+), which is essential for loading iron onto transferrin so it can be transported through the bloodstream.

Ceruloplasmin also functions as an acute-phase reactant, meaning its levels rise in response to inflammation, infection, or tissue injury.

Where Does Ceruloplasmin Come From?

The liver produces ceruloplasmin by attaching copper atoms to a protein called apoceruloplasmin, then releases the finished protein into the bloodstream.
