What is Choline?
Choline is an essential nutrient that your body needs for cell structure, nerve signalling, and liver function. Although the liver can produce small amounts, most choline must come from food.
A blood test measures the concentration of free choline circulating in plasma or serum. This reflects your body's choline balance, which depends on dietary intake, liver synthesis, and how quickly tissues use it.
Choline serves as a building block for phosphatidylcholine (a major component of cell membranes), acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter), and betaine (a methyl donor involved in homocysteine metabolism).
Where Does Choline Come From?
The liver produces a limited amount of choline via the PEMT enzyme, which converts phosphatidylethanolamine to phosphatidylcholine. Most choline must come from dietary sources such as eggs, liver, meat, fish, and cruciferous vegetables.
