What is Cytidine Triphosphate?

Cytidine triphosphate (CTP) is a pyrimidine nucleotide, one of the basic building blocks your cells use to make RNA and cell membranes. It consists of a cytosine base, a ribose sugar, and three phosphate groups.

Like ATP, CTP is a high-energy molecule, but its energy-transfer role is more specialized. CTP is primarily involved in phospholipid biosynthesis and RNA production rather than general cellular energy supply.

CTP is synthesized inside cells by the enzyme CTP synthase, which converts uridine triphosphate (UTP) into CTP. This is a tightly regulated process because CTP levels directly control how fast cells can build new membranes and divide.

Where Does Cytidine Triphosphate Come From?

CTP is produced inside virtually all cells through de novo synthesis (where the enzyme CTP synthase converts UTP to CTP using glutamine and ATP) and through salvage pathways that recycle existing cytidine nucleosides.
