What is Cytosine?

Cytosine is one of the four nucleobases that make up DNA, where it pairs with guanine. It is also found in RNA and plays a role in several cellular processes beyond genetic coding.

This test measures free cytosine circulating in the blood. Small amounts are normally present as a byproduct of nucleic acid turnover, the ongoing process by which cells break down and recycle DNA and RNA.

Elevated free cytosine in the blood may reflect increased cell turnover, altered pyrimidine metabolism, or reduced clearance of pyrimidine bases.

Where Does Cytosine Come From?

Free cytosine in the blood comes primarily from the normal breakdown of DNA and RNA during cell turnover throughout the body. A small amount also comes from dietary nucleic acids and from pyrimidine salvage pathway activity.
