What is Deoxyguanosine?
Deoxyguanosine (dG) is a purine nucleoside, one of the building blocks of DNA. It consists of the base guanine linked to a deoxyribose sugar.
Under normal conditions, plasma deoxyguanosine is kept very low by the enzyme purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP), which breaks it down as part of routine purine recycling. Healthy adults typically have plasma levels at or below 2 µmol/L.
Deoxyguanosine is measured as part of a purines and pyrimidines panel, primarily to detect inherited disorders of purine metabolism. Elevated levels can signal enzyme deficiencies that lead to immunodeficiency or neurological problems.
Where Does Deoxyguanosine Come From?
Deoxyguanosine is produced in all cells as a normal byproduct of DNA turnover and degradation. It is normally broken down by purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP), an enzyme found throughout the body, into guanine and deoxyribose-1-phosphate.
