What is eGFR (African American)?

The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a calculation that estimates how well your kidneys filter waste products from your blood. It measures how many milliliters of blood your kidneys clean per minute.

The "African American" version of eGFR refers to the older race-adjusted formula that applied a coefficient multiplier (1.16 for CKD-EPI or 1.21 for MDRD equations) for patients identified as Black. This adjustment resulted in higher eGFR values for Black patients compared to non-Black patients with identical creatinine levels.

Important: In 2021, major medical organizations recommended discontinuing race-adjusted eGFR calculations. The new CKD-EPI 2021 equation estimates kidney function using only age, sex, and serum creatinine without a race coefficient. Most laboratories have now adopted this race-free formula.

Where Does eGFR (African American) Come From?

eGFR is calculated from serum creatinine, a waste product produced by muscles and filtered by the kidneys. The calculation also uses age and sex to estimate the filtration rate of the glomeruli (tiny filtering units within the kidneys).
