What is Granulocytes Absolute?
Granulocytes absolute is the total count of granulocytes per volume of blood. Granulocytes are a group of white blood cells named for the tiny granules visible in their cytoplasm.
The three types of granulocytes are neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils. Neutrophils make up the vast majority, typically accounting for 90–95% of the total granulocyte count.
This marker is part of the complete blood count (CBC) with differential and reflects the body's innate immune capacity to respond to infections, particularly bacterial and fungal.
Where Does Granulocytes Absolute Come From?
Granulocytes are produced in the bone marrow from myeloid progenitor cells. Only about 3–5% of the body's neutrophils circulate in the blood at any given time, with the rest held in reserve in the bone marrow until needed.
