HDL-P, Small Unit Converter

Small HDL-P measures the concentration of small high-density lipoprotein particles in your blood. These particles typically range from 7.3 to 8.2 nm in diameter when measured by NMR spectroscopy.

HDL particles come in different sizes. Small HDL particles, also called pre-β-HDL, are the newly formed particles that initiate the process of removing cholesterol from your tissues. They represent a subset of total HDL particle count (HDL-P).

The relationship between small HDL-P and cardiovascular risk is complex. While small HDL particles play an important role in cholesterol efflux, elevated concentrations have been associated with increased cardiovascular risk in some studies, though this finding remains controversial.

Small HDL particles are produced primarily in the liver and intestines. They form when apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) is secreted and begins to acquire phospholipids and cholesterol from cells.
