What is Homocysteine?

Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid produced in your body when it breaks down methionine, an essential amino acid found in protein-rich foods like meat, fish, and dairy.

Normally, homocysteine is quickly converted into other useful compounds with the help of vitamins B6, B12, and folate (B9). When this process works well, only small amounts of homocysteine remain in your blood.

A typical healthy level is between 5 and 15 micromoles per liter (µmol/L). Levels above 15 µmol/L are considered elevated, with moderate levels between 15-30 µmol/L, intermediate levels between 30-100 µmol/L, and severe levels above 100 µmol/L.

Homocysteine is produced throughout the body as a natural byproduct of methionine metabolism. Methionine is an essential amino acid obtained from dietary proteins, particularly meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products.
