What is Indole-3-Acetic Acid?
Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) is a metabolite produced when gut bacteria break down the amino acid tryptophan. It belongs to a family of indole compounds generated by the gut microbiome, alongside indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) and indole-3-lactic acid (ILA).
Although IAA is well known as a plant growth hormone (auxin), in humans it serves as a signaling molecule that activates the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), a key regulator of immune function and intestinal barrier integrity.
Urinary IAA reflects the metabolic activity of tryptophan-fermenting bacteria in the gut. It is measured on organic acids testing panels as a marker of microbial tryptophan metabolism and potential dysbiosis.
Where Does Indole-3-Acetic Acid Come From?
IAA is produced almost entirely by gut bacteria metabolizing dietary tryptophan. Key producing species include Bacteroides, Clostridium, Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and certain acetogens such as Blautia hydrogenotrophica. Endogenous human production is minimal.
