What is Interleukin-17?
Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine, a signaling protein that helps coordinate immune responses. When the body detects bacteria, fungi, or tissue damage, IL-17 rallies neutrophils and other immune cells to the affected site.
IL-17 belongs to a family of six related cytokines (IL-17A through IL-17F). The form measured in standard blood tests is IL-17A, the most abundant and best-characterized member. It circulates at very low concentrations in healthy individuals, typically below 1.4 pg/mL.
Persistently elevated IL-17A is a hallmark of several autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Measuring it can help assess immune activation and guide treatment decisions, particularly in diseases like psoriasis and inflammatory arthritis.
Where Does Interleukin-17 Come From?
IL-17 is produced primarily by Th17 cells, a specialized subset of CD4+ T helper lymphocytes. Other immune cells also contribute, including gamma-delta T cells, type 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s), and certain natural killer T cells.
