What is Mean Arterial Pressure?

Mean arterial pressure (MAP) is the average pressure in your arteries during one complete heartbeat cycle. It reflects the steady driving force that pushes blood through your organs and tissues.

MAP is calculated from systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) using the formula: MAP = DBP + 1/3 × (SBP - DBP). Because the heart spends roughly two-thirds of each cycle in diastole (relaxation), MAP is weighted more heavily toward the diastolic value.

A normal MAP generally falls between 70 and 100 mmHg. For example, a blood pressure of 120/80 mmHg gives a MAP of approximately 93 mmHg.

Where Does Mean Arterial Pressure Come From?

MAP is generated by the heart pumping blood into the arterial system against the resistance of the blood vessels. It is determined by two factors: cardiac output (how much blood the heart pumps per minute) and systemic vascular resistance (how tightly the arterioles constrict).
