What is Myelocytes (Absolute)?

Myelocytes are immature white blood cells that normally develop inside the bone marrow as part of the process of creating mature neutrophils. In healthy individuals, myelocytes remain in the bone marrow and are not found in circulating blood.

The absolute myelocyte count measures the number of myelocytes per volume of blood rather than a percentage. The expected value in healthy adults is zero. Any detectable level indicates the bone marrow is releasing cells before they have fully matured.

When myelocytes and other immature granulocytes appear in the blood, it is called a "left shift." This is most often a temporary, reactive response to infection or inflammation, though it can also signal more serious bone marrow conditions.

Where Does Myelocytes (Absolute) Come From?

Myelocytes are produced in the bone marrow as an intermediate stage during the development of mature neutrophils (granulopoiesis). They develop from promyelocytes and mature into metamyelocytes before becoming band cells and finally segmented neutrophils.
