Urine osmolality measures the concentration of dissolved particles (solutes) in your urine. It reflects how dilute or concentrated your urine is at a given point in time.

The major solutes in urine include sodium, potassium, chloride, and urea. Urine osmolality is a more precise measure of urine concentration than specific gravity because it depends on the actual number of dissolved particles rather than their size or weight.

Results are typically reported in milliosmoles per kilogram (mOsm/kg). Random urine osmolality usually falls between 300 and 900 mOsm/kg, though values can range widely depending on hydration status and fluid intake.

Urine osmolality is determined by the kidneys as they filter blood and selectively reabsorb water and solutes. The concentration of urine is regulated primarily by ADH released from the posterior pituitary gland, which signals the kidneys to retain or excrete water.
