Real LDL Cholesterol Unit Converter

Real LDL cholesterol is a direct laboratory measurement of the cholesterol carried by low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles in your blood. Unlike calculated LDL, which estimates the value from other lipid panel results, this test measures LDL cholesterol using specialized reagents that isolate LDL particles.

LDL is often called "bad" cholesterol because elevated levels contribute to fatty buildup (plaque) in artery walls. This process, known as atherosclerosis, narrows arteries over time and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Direct measurement is especially valuable when triglycerides are elevated (above 400 mg/dL or 4.52 mmol/L), when a patient has not fasted, or when precise LDL values are needed for treatment decisions.

LDL particles are produced primarily in the liver. The liver manufactures cholesterol and packages it into very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles, which are converted to LDL in the bloodstream as they deliver triglycerides to tissues.
