TNF-alpha (tumor necrosis factor alpha) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine, a signaling protein produced mainly by immune cells that triggers and regulates inflammation throughout the body.

A TNF-alpha blood test measures the concentration of this cytokine in your blood, reported in pg/mL (picograms per milliliter). It is used to assess the degree of systemic inflammation, monitor autoimmune disease activity, and evaluate the effectiveness of anti-TNF therapies.

TNF-alpha was originally named for its ability to cause tumor cell death, though it is now understood to play a far broader role in immune function, inflammation, and metabolism.

Produced primarily by macrophages and monocytes, with additional contributions from T cells, natural killer cells, neutrophils, and mast cells. Adipose tissue (fat cells) is also a significant source, particularly in obesity.
