What is Cholesterol/HDL Ratio, Total?
The total cholesterol to HDL ratio is calculated by dividing your total cholesterol by your HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. It provides a quick snapshot of the balance between all the cholesterol in your blood and the protective "good" cholesterol.
For example, if your total cholesterol is 200 mg/dL and your HDL is 50 mg/dL, your ratio is 4.0. A ratio below 5 is generally considered acceptable, while a ratio below 3.5 is considered optimal.
Research suggests this ratio may be a better predictor of cardiovascular risk than looking at total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol alone, as it captures both the harmful and protective aspects of your lipid profile in a single number.
Where Does Cholesterol/HDL Ratio, Total Come From?
This ratio is calculated from your total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels, both of which are measured in a standard lipid panel blood test. The liver produces most of the cholesterol in your body, while some comes from the foods you eat.
