What is Troponin T, High Sensitivity?

Troponin T is a structural protein found in heart muscle cells that plays a key role in regulating cardiac contraction. High-sensitivity troponin T (hs-cTnT) is a blood test that detects very small amounts of this protein, allowing earlier and more accurate detection of heart muscle damage.

When heart muscle cells are injured or destroyed, troponin T leaks into the bloodstream. Even minor cardiac stress releases detectable amounts, making hs-cTnT one of the most sensitive markers of myocardial injury available.

In healthy individuals, troponin T circulates at extremely low levels. The commonly used upper reference limit is 14 ng/L, with sex-specific thresholds of approximately 10 ng/L for women and 15 ng/L for men.

Where Does Troponin T, High Sensitivity Come From?

Produced by cardiac muscle cells (cardiomyocytes), where it helps regulate heart muscle contraction. The cardiac form of troponin T can also be produced by severely diseased or regenerating skeletal muscle.
