What is Urine Total Protein?

Urine total protein measures the combined amount of all proteins present in your urine, including albumin, globulins, and smaller proteins normally filtered by the kidneys.

Healthy kidneys filter waste from the blood while keeping useful proteins in circulation. When the kidneys are working properly, very little protein passes into the urine. A normal amount is less than 150 milligrams per day.

When protein levels exceed 150 mg per day, the condition is called proteinuria. This can be a sign of kidney damage or other underlying health conditions, though temporary increases can occur from exercise, fever, or stress.

Where Does Urine Total Protein Come From?

The proteins found in urine are normally present in the blood. Small amounts of albumin are filtered at the glomerulus (the kidney's filtration unit) and reabsorbed by the proximal tubule. When this filtration or reabsorption process is impaired, excess protein passes into the urine.
