What is Bisphenol A, Urine Creatinine Ratio?

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic industrial chemical used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. It is one of the highest-volume chemicals produced worldwide and is found in many everyday products, including food and beverage containers, can linings, and thermal receipt paper.

This test measures the total amount of BPA (both conjugated and unconjugated forms) in a spot urine sample, then divides it by the urine creatinine concentration. The result is expressed in micrograms of BPA per gram of creatinine.

Creatinine correction adjusts for differences in urine dilution caused by hydration status, so results can be compared meaningfully across time points and between individuals.

Where Does Bisphenol A, Urine Creatinine Ratio Come From?

BPA is not produced by the body. It enters the body primarily through ingestion of food and beverages that have been in contact with BPA-containing packaging, particularly canned goods with epoxy linings and polycarbonate plastic containers. Additional exposure occurs through handling thermal receipt paper and, to a lesser extent, through dust, dental sealants, and water from epoxy-lined pipes.
