Blasts are immature blood cells that have not yet developed into functional mature cells such as red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets. They are large cells with a high nucleus-to-cytoplasm ratio and smooth chromatin.

In healthy individuals, blasts are confined to the bone marrow, where they mature before being released into the bloodstream. A normal CBC with differential reports less than 1% blasts in peripheral blood. Finding any blasts on a blood test is considered a significant result that warrants further investigation.

There are different types of blasts depending on the cell lineage. Myeloblasts are precursors to granulocytes and monocytes, while lymphoblasts develop into lymphocytes. Identifying the blast type is essential for diagnosis and treatment.

Blasts originate from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow. They represent the earliest identifiable stage of blood cell development and normally complete their maturation within the marrow before entering the bloodstream.
