What is CA-125?

CA-125 (cancer antigen 125) is a protein produced by cells throughout the body, including cells lining the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, lungs, and the membranes of the chest and abdomen. It is encoded by the MUC16 gene and belongs to the mucin family of glycoproteins.

The CA-125 blood test measures the level of this protein in your blood. It is primarily used as a tumor marker for ovarian cancer, helping to monitor treatment response, detect recurrence, and evaluate pelvic masses.

A level above 35 U/mL is generally considered elevated. However, CA-125 can be raised by many noncancerous conditions, so an elevated result does not mean cancer is present.

Where Does CA-125 Come From?

CA-125 is produced by many healthy cells throughout the body, including those lining the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, peritoneum (abdominal lining), pleura (chest lining), pancreas, and breast tissue. Cancer or inflammation affecting these tissues can significantly increase CA-125 production.
