What is Cis-Aconitic Acid?
Cis-aconitic acid is an organic acid produced as an intermediate step in the citric acid cycle (also called the Krebs cycle or TCA cycle), the central energy-producing pathway in your cells.
It is formed when the enzyme aconitase converts citrate into isocitrate, passing through cis-aconitate as a brief intermediate. Measuring cis-aconitic acid in blood or urine reflects how well this step of the cycle is functioning.
Because aconitase is highly sensitive to oxidative stress and toxic metals, elevated cis-aconitic acid can serve as an indirect signal of mitochondrial strain or impaired energy metabolism.
Where Does Cis-Aconitic Acid Come From?
Cis-aconitic acid is produced inside mitochondria in virtually every cell. The enzyme aconitase converts citrate to cis-aconitate and then to isocitrate as part of the citric acid cycle.
