What is Eosinophil Cationic Protein?
Eosinophil Cationic Protein (ECP) is a cytotoxic protein stored in the granules of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell involved in allergic reactions and parasite defense. When eosinophils become activated, they release ECP into surrounding tissues and the bloodstream.
Measuring serum ECP reflects eosinophil activation and degranulation, not just the number of eosinophils present. This makes it a more specific indicator of eosinophilic inflammation than a standard eosinophil count, which only measures quantity.
ECP belongs to the ribonuclease A superfamily and is one of four major proteins released from eosinophil granules, alongside major basic protein, eosinophil-derived neurotoxin, and eosinophil peroxidase.
Where Does Eosinophil Cationic Protein Come From?
ECP is produced by eosinophils during their maturation in the bone marrow and stored in their secondary (specific) granules. It is released into the blood and tissues when eosinophils are activated by allergens, parasites, or inflammatory signals.
