What is Immunoglobulin G Subclass 3?
Immunoglobulin G Subclass 3 (IgG3) is one of four subclasses of IgG, the most abundant antibody type in the bloodstream. It makes up roughly 4 to 8% of total IgG.
IgG3 has the longest and most flexible hinge region of all IgG subclasses, which allows it to bind pathogens more readily. It is the most potent activator of the complement system, a cascade of proteins that helps destroy invading organisms.
Despite being the least abundant IgG subclass, IgG3 is highly potent. It has a shorter half-life (about 7 days) compared to the other subclasses (about 21 days), meaning the body turns it over more quickly.
Where Does Immunoglobulin G Subclass 3 Come From?
Produced by plasma cells, which are mature B lymphocytes found in lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, and mucosal tissues throughout the body.
