What is Leptin?
Leptin is a hormone produced by your fat cells that tells your brain how much energy you have stored. It acts as a long-term fuel gauge, signaling whether your body has enough fat reserves or needs more food.
When leptin levels are adequate, your brain receives a "well-fed" signal that helps regulate appetite and metabolism. When levels drop, your body interprets this as starvation and triggers hunger and energy-conserving responses.
Leptin levels rise exponentially (not linearly) with body fat mass. Women typically have higher circulating levels than men, and levels follow a daily rhythm, peaking between midnight and early morning.
Where Does Leptin Come From?
Produced primarily by fat cells (adipocytes) in white adipose tissue. Smaller amounts are also made by brown fat, the stomach, skeletal muscle, ovaries, placenta, and bone marrow.
