What is Mercury, Urine (Random)?
A random urine mercury test measures the total concentration of mercury in a spot urine sample. It primarily reflects exposure to elemental (metallic) and inorganic forms of mercury, which the kidneys excrete over time.
Unlike blood mercury, which reflects recent or acute exposure, urine mercury is a better indicator of chronic, longer-term body burden. It is commonly used to assess occupational exposure, monitor patients with known mercury contact, and track the effectiveness of chelation therapy.
A random (spot) collection is more convenient than a 24-hour urine collection, though results may be adjusted by creatinine concentration to account for urine dilution.
Where Does Mercury, Urine (Random) Come From?
Mercury is not produced by the body. It enters through external exposure, primarily from dietary fish and seafood consumption, inhalation of mercury vapor (occupational settings, broken thermometers), and older dental amalgam fillings that contain elemental mercury.
