What is Total Omega-3?
Total Omega-3 measures the sum of three long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in your blood: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The result is reported as a percentage by weight of total fatty acids in whole blood.
These three fatty acids are essential nutrients that the body cannot produce efficiently on its own, so they must come primarily from food or supplements. The test reflects what has actually reached your bloodstream, not dietary intake alone.
Higher values indicate better omega-3 status. A result of 5.5% or above is considered low risk, 3.8 to 5.4% is moderate risk, and 3.7% or below is high risk for cardiovascular events.
Where Does Total Omega-3 Come From?
EPA, DPA, and DHA are obtained primarily from dietary sources, especially oily fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, and anchovies. The body can convert the plant-based omega-3 ALA (from flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts) into EPA and DHA, but this conversion is very inefficient, typically below 10%.
