What is Phosphoserine?
Phosphoserine (O-phosphoserine) is the phosphorylated form of the amino acid serine. It is a key intermediate in the body's production of L-serine through a metabolic branch of glycolysis known as the phosphorylated pathway.
In the phosphorylated pathway, the glycolytic intermediate 3-phosphoglycerate is converted in three enzymatic steps to L-serine, with phosphoserine as the penultimate product. The final enzyme, phosphoserine phosphatase, removes the phosphate group to release free serine.
In plasma, phosphoserine normally circulates at very low concentrations. Changes in its level can signal disruptions in serine metabolism, nutrient cofactor status, or organ function.
Where Does Phosphoserine Come From?
Phosphoserine is produced in most tissues as an intermediate of the phosphorylated pathway, a three-enzyme branch of glycolysis. This pathway is especially active in the brain (astrocytes), liver, and kidneys. It can also be derived from dietary protein sources.
