Pipecolic acid is a cyclic amino acid produced during the breakdown of lysine, an essential amino acid obtained from dietary protein. It is not used to build proteins but serves as an important metabolic intermediate.
The body breaks down pipecolic acid inside peroxisomes, small cellular compartments that handle certain types of fat and amino acid processing. When peroxisomes are not functioning properly, pipecolic acid accumulates in the blood.
Measuring pipecolic acid helps evaluate whether peroxisomes are working correctly. Elevated levels may indicate a peroxisomal disorder, a defect in lysine metabolism, or liver disease.
Where Does Pipecolic Acid Come From?
Produced mainly in the brain through the pipecolate pathway of lysine metabolism, with smaller contributions from the liver. Intestinal bacteria also produce D-pipecolic acid from dietary lysine.
