What is Pyruvic Acid?
Pyruvic acid (pyruvate) is a three-carbon organic acid produced as the end product of glycolysis, the process by which cells break down glucose for energy.
It sits at a critical crossroads in metabolism. Under aerobic conditions, pyruvate enters the mitochondria and is converted to acetyl-CoA by the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, feeding the citric acid (TCA) cycle and driving ATP production. When oxygen is limited, pyruvate is instead converted to lactate.
Because pyruvate connects so many metabolic pathways, measuring its blood level alongside lactate (the lactate-to-pyruvate ratio) provides a window into mitochondrial function and overall metabolic health.
Where Does Pyruvic Acid Come From?
Pyruvate is produced in the cytoplasm of virtually every cell in the body during glycolysis, the breakdown of glucose. It is not made by a single organ; any tissue that metabolizes glucose generates pyruvate.
