What is Tissue Transglutaminase IgA?

Tissue transglutaminase IgA (tTG-IgA) is an antibody your immune system produces in response to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. It is the primary blood test used to screen for celiac disease.

In people with celiac disease, eating gluten triggers an abnormal immune response. The immune system produces antibodies that mistakenly attack tissue transglutaminase, an enzyme that helps repair cells in the intestinal lining.

Elevated tTG-IgA levels indicate an active immune reaction to gluten and suggest celiac disease may be present. The test has a sensitivity of approximately 93% and specificity of about 96% when performed on someone eating a gluten-containing diet.

Where Does Tissue Transglutaminase IgA Come From?

tTG-IgA antibodies are produced by immune cells (B lymphocytes) in response to gluten exposure. They are primarily secreted by plasma cells in the intestinal lining and circulate in the bloodstream.
