Acylcarnitine C18:1, also called oleoylcarnitine, is a long-chain acylcarnitine formed when oleic acid (an 18-carbon monounsaturated fatty acid) is conjugated with L-carnitine for transport into mitochondria.
This conjugation is essential for long-chain fatty acids to cross the inner mitochondrial membrane, where they undergo beta-oxidation to produce energy. Because C18:1 contains a double bond, it requires an additional enzymatic step involving enoyl-CoA isomerase during oxidation.
When fatty acid oxidation is functioning normally, C18:1 is rapidly processed and present only in small amounts. Elevated levels suggest that the body is having difficulty breaking down long-chain fats for energy.
Where Does Acylcarnitine C18:1 Come From?
C18:1 is formed in cells throughout the body when oleic acid (from dietary fats or adipose tissue breakdown) is conjugated with carnitine by the enzyme carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT I), primarily in the liver, skeletal muscle, and heart.
