What is Acylcarnitine C5-DC?

Acylcarnitine C5-DC, also called glutarylcarnitine, is a dicarboxylic acylcarnitine formed when glutaryl-CoA (a byproduct of lysine, hydroxylysine, and tryptophan breakdown) is conjugated with carnitine.

In healthy individuals, C5-DC is present at very low concentrations in blood and urine. When the enzyme glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase is impaired, glutaryl-CoA accumulates and is increasingly shunted into the carnitine conjugation pathway, raising C5-DC levels.

C5-DC is measured as part of an acylcarnitine profile and is a key screening marker for glutaric acidemia type 1 (GA-1), a rare inherited metabolic disorder.

Where Does Acylcarnitine C5-DC Come From?

C5-DC is produced in mitochondria throughout the body when glutaryl-CoA, an intermediate in lysine, hydroxylysine, and tryptophan degradation, is conjugated with carnitine. The liver and kidneys are the primary sites of this amino acid catabolism.
