What is Androstenedione?

Androstenedione (sometimes called A4) is a steroid hormone that serves as a building block for the body's main sex hormones. It is converted into testosterone and estrone, making it a key intermediate in hormone production.

On its own, androstenedione has only weak androgenic (masculinizing) activity. Its primary importance lies in being the common precursor from which the body makes both androgens and estrogens.

Measuring androstenedione can help evaluate adrenal gland function, investigate signs of excess androgen production, and monitor certain hormonal conditions.

Where Does Androstenedione Come From?

Androstenedione is produced by the adrenal glands and the gonads (ovaries in women, testes in men). In premenopausal women, the adrenal glands and ovaries each produce roughly half of the total androstenedione, approximately 3 mg per day combined.
