Androsterone (3α-hydroxy-5α-androstan-17-one) is a steroid hormone produced when your body breaks down testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is a weak androgen with roughly one-seventh the potency of testosterone.

Rather than being an inert waste product, androsterone is a genuine metabolic intermediate that can be converted back into DHT. It also functions as a neurosteroid, modulating brain receptors involved in mood and stress.

Measuring androsterone in blood reflects your body's overall androgen metabolism and its preference for the 5α-reductase pathway. It is typically ordered when earlier tests such as testosterone, DHEA-S, or 17-hydroxyprogesterone leave unanswered questions.

Androsterone is formed primarily in the liver, where enzymes (5α-reductase and 3α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) convert testosterone and DHT into androsterone. Smaller amounts are also produced in the adrenal glands and gonads.
