What is Beta-Gamma Tocopherol?
Beta-gamma tocopherol is a combined measurement of two forms of vitamin E in your blood: beta-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol. These are two of the eight naturally occurring forms of vitamin E (four tocopherols and four tocotrienols).
Labs report beta and gamma tocopherol together because the two molecules are nearly identical in structure and cannot be separated by standard laboratory methods. In practice, the combined result is dominated by gamma-tocopherol, since beta-tocopherol is present only in trace amounts in most people's blood.
Gamma-tocopherol is the most abundant form of vitamin E in the typical American diet, found in common cooking oils and nuts. However, plasma levels are much lower than alpha-tocopherol because the liver preferentially retains alpha-tocopherol and metabolizes other forms.
Where Does Beta-Gamma Tocopherol Come From?
Gamma-tocopherol is obtained entirely from the diet. The richest sources are vegetable oils (soybean, corn, canola, sesame), nuts (walnuts, pecans, pistachios), and seeds (flaxseed, sesame seeds).
