What is Fecal Calprotectin?
Fecal calprotectin is a protein found in stool that reflects inflammation in the intestines. It belongs to the S-100 protein family and binds calcium and zinc.
Calprotectin makes up roughly 60% of the soluble protein inside neutrophils, the white blood cells that rush to sites of inflammation. When the gut lining is inflamed, neutrophils migrate into the intestinal wall and release calprotectin directly into the stool.
The amount of calprotectin in stool correlates with how much inflammation is present in the gut, making it a useful noninvasive window into intestinal health.
Where Does Fecal Calprotectin Come From?
Calprotectin is produced primarily by neutrophils, and in smaller amounts by monocytes and macrophages. It is released into the gut when these immune cells migrate into inflamed intestinal tissue and break down.
