Cytidine monophosphate (CMP) is a pyrimidine nucleotide, one of the four basic building blocks of RNA. It consists of three parts: the nucleobase cytosine, the sugar ribose, and a phosphate group.
Inside cells, CMP participates in RNA synthesis, membrane phospholipid production, and the sialylation of proteins. In blood, CMP levels reflect the balance between pyrimidine synthesis, salvage, and degradation.
Measuring CMP can help identify disorders of nucleotide metabolism, assess pyrimidine pathway function, and support the evaluation of conditions involving high cell turnover.
Where Does Cytidine Monophosphate Come From?
CMP is produced in all cells through de novo pyrimidine synthesis and the salvage pathway, with the liver being a major site of both. The majority of free CMP in the body comes from the enzymatic degradation of RNA.
