What is Deoxycytidine Monophosphate?
Deoxycytidine monophosphate (dCMP) is a pyrimidine nucleotide and one of the four building blocks of DNA. It consists of a cytosine base, a deoxyribose sugar, and a single phosphate group.
Inside cells, dCMP is phosphorylated further into deoxycytidine triphosphate (dCTP), which is directly incorporated into new DNA strands during replication. Measuring dCMP in plasma reflects the balance between nucleotide production and DNA turnover.
Because dCMP sits at a metabolic crossroads, its levels can serve as a window into pyrimidine metabolism, DNA synthesis activity, and certain genetic enzyme deficiencies.
Where Does Deoxycytidine Monophosphate Come From?
dCMP is produced in virtually all nucleated cells through two routes: de novo pyrimidine synthesis (a multi-step pathway starting from carbamoyl phosphate) and the salvage pathway, in which deoxycytidine kinase recycles deoxycytidine released during DNA breakdown.
