What is Guanosine Diphosphate?

Guanosine diphosphate (GDP) is a nucleotide made up of three parts: guanine (a purine base), ribose (a five-carbon sugar), and two phosphate groups. It is found in virtually every cell in the body and plays a central role in energy transfer and cell signaling.

GDP is closely related to guanosine triphosphate (GTP). When GTP is used for cellular work, one of its phosphate groups is removed, producing GDP. This cycling between GTP and GDP acts as a molecular switch that turns many cellular processes on and off.

When measured in blood, GDP levels reflect the balance of purine nucleotide metabolism across the body. It is typically included in advanced metabolomics panels rather than standard blood tests.

Where Does Guanosine Diphosphate Come From?

GDP is produced in every nucleated cell in the body, primarily through the hydrolysis of GTP by GTPase enzymes and during substrate-level phosphorylation in the citric acid cycle. It is found in the cytoplasm, mitochondria, nucleus, and Golgi apparatus.
